Seaweed cultivation        Photosynthesis

Seaweed farming removes carbon quickly, as seaweed grows about five times as fast as trees. A portion of the harvest drops to the ocean floor, where depending on the location and depth the CO2 is stored for centuries or more. Seaweed products with long lifetimes, like construction materials, enable long term carbon storage (Construction Stored Carbon). And seaweed biostimulants act like natural fertilisers adding lots of carbon to soils where they are applied (Land Stored Carbon).

A multiplier effect is reaches with Both Construction and Land Stored Carbon applications of seaweed products. In constructions, substitution of high impact materials like concrete or rockwool can double the positive climate impact. On land, seaweed fertilisers substitute artificial fertiliser which also have high carbon emissions.

Who is removing the carbon?

The Seaweed Company BV, led by Joost Wouters from Schiedam, the Netherlands.

About the remover

The Seaweed Company captures the value of seaweed. They combine unique biological and technological expertise to integrate the seeding, growing, harvesting and processing of seaweed. As a result they are able to cultivate certified seaweed at open sea, and produce seaweed in the quantities needed to fully benefit from commercial CO2-reducing applications. Without using any land, fresh water, or fertiliser.
